extra credit projects

April 27th, 2007

A break from the lack-of-scheduled-plumbing-inspection-bitching–which has been an on-going issue for over two months now, strangling our project from moving forward like so much kudzu vine. Luke and I both have pet projects that we’re implementing into the reno. His will require its own post as it well deserves one, but in a nutshell, Luke designed an “urban outhouse” for the cats. Mine is pure fluff. I’ve been fixated on chandeliers that are branches, gaudy branches, dripping with crystals. Some examples below: (left to right) 1) Massive whole upside-down tree mounted on ceiling and hung with crystals in the Grand Central Station Market 2) Lizard Brooch chandelier by Moth 3) Tord Boontje Branch chandelier.

The two chandeliers that are for sale are monstrously expensive. Of course, one of them is programmed with mini LEDs and rotates (too much, even for me) and the other looks like each and every one of those wee crystals was hand-applied by someone with a high-octane obsessive compulsive disorder. At any rate, these are just inspirations, anyway, as I really would like mine to look more like coral branches. So I bought some manzanita branches, which I’m lacquering red and planning to suspend around an existing light fixture. If I can muster enough patience, I might apply some crystals, but not nearly in the density of the images shown above.

[...] Karyn conceived of a beautiful chandelier for our dining room, inspired by similar ones she had seen, and dedicatedly fashioned it at her studio over the past few months. Last week it was ready for hanging and is unquestionably the most beautiful and dramatic element in our entire apartment. K special ordered several different types of branches and chose these ones as most suited to her concept. She laboriously painted them, coated them with resin and applied jewels and crystals to arrive at this stunning suspension evoking coral and the aquatic realms which we love so. [...]
